NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION = TRUTHFUL OR LYING CUES
Some people may be very persuasive with their words. How can you tell if a person is telling the truth? Some of the signs for lying are also signs of defensiveness or nervousness. Therefore, it is important that you know the person and their mannerisms before you accuse a person of lying. If you see any of the signs, rather than jumping to conclusios, you should use those signs to raise your awareness that the provider may not be receptive or truthful. The following are common body language cues to look for when trying to determine if a person is lying.
No eye contact
Body turned away
Touches nose
Increased perspiration
Red in the face and neck, breaathes rapidly
Clears throat
changes pitch of voice
When you see these signs ask more questions and probe more deeply to validate your feelings. Think about your provider's personality. Here are some questions you need to ask yourself:
Is she shy?
Does she often avoid eye contact? In some cultures it is disrespectful to make eye contact.
Does she often get red or flushed from nervousness on your other visits?
Learning a provider's natural mannerisms will help you to interpret her body language/
Learning to recognie body language takes a lot of practice. When you can sit back and watch people, take advantage of it. Try to identify some subtle and non- subtle reactions.
