HOW TO ESTABLISH A GOOD BEDTIME ROUTINE
HOW TO ESTABLISH A GOOD BEDTIME ROOUTINE
Is bedtime at your house a battle? Have you noticed how sometimes children can get more wound up before bed and it's hard to calm them down? You are not alone.
A good bedtime routine is essential to helping your child to calm down and prepare to fall asleep. This fact sheet will discuss ways to make bedtime more successful.
1. REDUCE STRESS BEFORE BEDTIME
Your child should begin the calming down process before bedtime. Don't encourage very active activities at this time (running, yelling, loud noises).
2. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE
Bath time, brushing teeth, picking out a story to read, turning down the lights, all signal to the chld that bedtime is coming.
3. PLAY ACT BEDTIME
Play with your child putting their stuffed animals to bed. Go through the bedtime routine with them as they act it out with their stuffed animals.
4. SET A CONSTANT TIME FOR BED
Know your child and set a time that will give your child enough sleep. Once you set that bedtime try to stick with it. This will help your child to adjust their body to a regular sleep routine.
5. BEDTIME SNACK
If your child needs a bedtime snack, make sure you give it to them before they brush their teeth. Let them get into the habit of not eating after they brush their teeth for the night. The snack should not contain sugar. Something warm and soothing often helps the child get sleepy, such as warm milk and toast. Juices contain a lot of sugar and could hinder your child from falling asleep.
6. CHECK THE ENVIRONMENT
You may want to play soft music for your child. Make sure the room is not too hot. Children sleep better in a cool environment. The room should be dark. If your child needs a night light pick one with a soft glow. Avoid light that comes from a computer or other electronic device. Snuggly clean comfortable bedding helps your child get ready to sleep.
7. HELP YOUR CHILD SOOTHE THEMSELF
Teach your child soothing songs he can sing to himself. Many children quietly sing themselves to sleep. For some families teaching the child a prayer will relax them. Practice these self-soothing activities during the day so the child is very familiar with them.
8. REDUCE DRINKS BEFORE BED
How much is too much? If your child is getting up at night to go to the bathroom, they are probably drinking too much before bed. If your child is asking for a drink before bed, give them a small cup of water (a few ounces). Do not give them any sugary juice. Make sure they go to the bathroom before bed.
9. PRAISE YOUR CHILD
Notice and praise your child when they have met a goal, such as sleeping all night in their own bed or going to sleep without a tantrum.
10. MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD HAS A WELL BALANCED DIET
Eating a well balanced diet will help your child to play, learn, and develop successfully.
