MOTIVATIONAL SKILLS- BE EFFECTIVE
As I am sure you will agree, every provider is different. Each has their own personality and circumstances. To be an effective motivator, you need to know and understand your provider. Here are some things you should think about to be a good motivator.
BE RESPECTFUL
That means working with the provider to learn how she can transfer the knowledge into practical situations. Do not be judgmental of her objections but be respectful of her feelings and work with her to accomplish goals.
NEVER TALK DOWN TO PROVIDER
When explaining a new requirement or best practice, acknowledge what the provider is doing right. You do not want the provider to feel that she is being told to do things differently because she has been doing things wrong. Build on the provider’s experience so that she can accomplish the goal.
BE OPEN TO PROVIDER’S IDEAS
Identify the goal and listen to the provider’s solution to achieving the goal. You would never want to project an ‘it’s my way or the highway’ attitude. There may be more than one way to achieve the goal, therefore be open to listening to the provider’s solution. Providers may be more motivated if they feel they are part of the solution.
ADDRESS CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
Always be aware of cultural differences. Address these differences before they become an issue.
Reflect on how you interact with your providers. Look at your successes and evaluate what works and where you might need to change. Communicate often with your providers and demonstrate that you are willing to help them learn. Remember to acknowledge and praise even the smallest progress.
