SAFETY - FALLING TVS
TODAY reports:
Falling TVs send a child to the ER every 30 minutes!
Many homes have large flat screen TVs. These TVs are posing a risk to small children. They are top heavy and are easy for a child to pull over. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) 2017 report, estimates that annually there are 11,800 injuries involving TVs falling. From 2000 to 20015, the CPSC reports 315 deaths due to falling TVs. Many of these accidents occurred when a child climbed on the furniture where the TV was located.
The large TVs are very top heavy and when they fall on children they cannot only crush the child, but cause severe neck and brain injuries. 64% of the injuries are on children under five years old. Young children cannot get out of the way of falling TVs as quickly as older children. The report also states that almost 61% of the injured are boys.
Here are some things you can do to ensure the saftey of your children:
1. Do not put toys or remotes on the top on the TV.
2. Create a limited play space area in and around the TV.
3. Make sure the TV is attached to studs (wood or metal), ceiling joists, or, if the wall is concrete, use the proper anchoring kit.
